Better Winter Running Pt.2
In my earlier blog entry, Better Winter Running Pt. 1, I highlighted several shoes that give a runner better traction and warmth. Today, I am going to share two additional tricks: traction control and snowshoe running.
First, to combat icy conditions, try a traction control device like Due North Ice or Snow Cleats. These are similar to the more commonly known Yacktracks in that they slip over any running shoe (much like rubber shoe galoshes); however, these products have 6 carbon spikes on the bottom that bite into the ice. We feel that the Due North Ice and Snow Cleats give you a better advantage on ice and feel more "normal" when running. The best part is the spikes are replaceable when they become dull.
Secondly, as an alternative to a run on the treadmill, have you ever considered snowshoe running? If not, try it out! You’ll be surprised how much fun it is. Not only is it a great workout, but you can do it in half the time. (I always say a 30 min snowshoe is equivalent to an hour run.) Snowshoeing is similar enough to running that I like it, but different enough that on the days I go for a traditional run I feel refreshed. This year, TCRC has two different brands of snowshoes - Atlas and Dion. Come-in and check them out.
I hope you find these tricks helpful so that you can get out there and have fun this winter. As always, if you have any questions please give us a call. Happy running!
